Core-Strengthening Routine to Enhance Your Yoga Practice
By Emilia Farry · Consistency
Core strength is essential for enhancing your yoga practice, offering stability and presence in each pose. This 13-minute routine targets deep core muscles, supporting smoother transitions and increased mindfulness.
Roll Down Exercise
Begin seated on your sit bones with knees bent and feet hip-distance apart. If available, place a block between your thighs to engage leg and core muscles. Hold another block between your hands. Inhale to sit tall, rooting through your sit bones. Exhale slowly, lowering your spine to the mat one vertebra at a time. Rest your head on the mat, inhale to lift the block overhead, then exhale to bring it forward, guiding your torso upright. Repeat three times.
Muscles Targeted
This exercise primarily targets the rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis, and obliques, enhancing core stability essential for yoga poses.
Form Cues
Ensure your back rolls down smoothly, maintaining control. Avoid rushing or jerking movements to fully engage the core.
Sets/Reps
For core endurance, perform 3 sets of 5 repetitions.
Variation: Block-Free Roll Down
This variation eliminates the block, focusing purely on core engagement to control the descent.
Boat Pose and Low Boat Transition
From an upright position, keep the block between your thighs, and set the other block aside. Lean back, lifting feet off the mat into Boat Pose. Optionally, lower legs so toes hover or keep shins parallel to the mat. Inhale to sit taller, then exhale to transition into Low Boat, extending legs forward and lowering the torso. Inhale to hold, keeping chin lifted. Exhale back to Boat Pose, repeating five times.
Muscles Targeted
This transition works the hip flexors, rectus abdominis, and obliques, improving core strength and balance.
Form Cues
Maintain a straight back in Boat Pose and ensure controlled movements. Avoid collapsing the chest or rounding the spine.
Sets/Reps
Perform 3 sets of 5 transitions for endurance and core stability.
Variation: Supported Boat Pose
Place hands behind you for support, reducing strain while maintaining core activation.
Dead Bug Variation
Lie on your back with knees bent, shins parallel to the mat. Press a block against your thighs with palms. Inhale to extend the left leg and right arm, maintaining tension to keep the block in place. Exhale back to center, then switch sides. Repeat four times per side.
Muscles Targeted
This exercise engages the transverse abdominis, rectus abdominis, and obliques, promoting core stability and coordination.
Form Cues
Keep the lower back pressed to the mat, avoiding arching. Control the movement to maintain block tension.
Sets/Reps
For endurance, perform 3 sets of 8 repetitions per side.
Variation: Arm-Only Dead Bug
Focus on arm movements only to simplify the exercise while still engaging the core.
Triple Crunch Exercise
Place a block between your thighs, hands behind your head. Inhale deeply, then exhale to lift shoulder blades slightly. Exhale again to lift higher, then once more to lift even further. Inhale to release. Repeat six times with short, sharp exhalations.
Muscles Targeted
This exercise targets the upper rectus abdominis and obliques, enhancing core definition.
Form Cues
Engage the core throughout, avoiding pulling on the neck. Focus on squeezing the block to activate inner thighs and core.
Sets/Reps
Perform 3 sets of 6 repetitions for strength and definition.
Variation: Block-Free Triple Crunch
Remove the block for a simpler version, focusing on core engagement without additional resistance.
